UPDATE: No Other Nation Has Taken Its Battered Horses And Donkeys Off The Streets 11/29/12-Kinship Circle followed CHAIs (Concern For Helping Animals In Israel) lead to rally support for a ban on horse-drawn carts due to their elemental cruelty and threat to public safety. While the city of Tel Aviv announced a ban in 2009, it was rarely enforced. Now an entire nation will clear its streets and highways of the merciless practice. CHAI reports that once the Knesset Finance Committee approves the Ministry of Transportations new regulations, a ban on horse-drawn carts goes into effect. If enforced, people will no longer see battered horses and donkeys who suffer from fatigue, dehydration, chronic hoof problems and lameness as they lug carts laden with bulky furniture, produce, or construction supplies. And while global campaigns to end horse-drawn vehicles are underway, notably the Coalition To Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages in New York, Israel will be the first to implement a countrywide ban. "We are thrilled to see the light at the end of the tunnel in our struggle to end this terrible, outmoded phenomenon that has no place in the modern state of Israel," said Hakol Chai representative, Michal Volansky.
