IMAGES FROM A TRAGEDYTears come easy at the emergency disaster shelter in Teresopolis, Brazil. As happened in post-Katrina New Orleans, starving dogs eat homeless cats. Rescuers spot a muddy dog chain affixed to a post. The end of this chain disappears under hardened mud. Animals, along with humans, are buried alive in landslides. Some, miraculously, survive in underground air pockets — literally entombed alive until (or if) found. Others navigate desolate landscapes where humans fled without them. Food and fresh water are gone. An ongoing parade of species from dogs, cats and bunnies to ducks, chickens, horses are recovered from the wreckage. Those without community or family caregivers wind up at the overcrowded disaster shelter. By 9:00am, the heat bears down, especially inside the old warehouse that doubles as an animal shelter. Kinship Circle needs more funding now to sponsor veterinarians and search-rescue volunteers in Brazil. We seek volunteers with veterinary and animal care skills to staff the emergency shelter. Volunteers trained in search-rescue are needed to comb villages and towns in this precarious mountainous terrain. Click here to submit our disaster response volunteer form.

At 11:30am, a mom of four pups goes into death throes. Volunteer veterinarian Thereza Dantas pronounces the dog dead five minutes later. The diagnosis is eclampsia, milk fever, fatal if not detected early. The shelter does not have enough volunteers to closely observe each dog. One dog presents neurologic symptoms that reflect the contagious virus Bebete calls Cinomose. This poor doberman mix cannot hold his head steady. His head bobs and sways. Cataracts cloud his eyes, even though he is just over one-year old. He is hand fed soft food since he cannot eat on his own. On a more hopeful note, we observe many adoptions today. Bebete identifies each animal and logs adoptions. Adopters must agree to let EstimAcao do follow-up visits, to ensure animals are in safe, loving environments where their daily needs are fulfilled.

Until Are Are Adopted? Kinship Circle's Sister Michael Marie, with local volunteer Stephanie, assists Teresopolis shelter manager Bebete Filipi on daily med rounds. Bebete goes through a 50 ml bottle of antibiotics daily! An old warehouse, with a labyrinth of narrow corridors that connect variously sized rooms, doubles as an animal crisis shelter. Discarded office items are put to use. Dismantled file drawers serve as animal beds. Dogs are tethered on outdoor patios with canvas sheet roofs. Donated pens and cages align in rows to fill large concrete rooms. Cinder blocks are topped with veterinary supplies in a makeshift sick ward. Kibble, bowls and leashes are everywhere the eyes can see.

A pit bull mix Dennis helped rescue yesterday in Teresopolis has mammary tumors that seep blood. The dog is weak, dehydrated and underweight. A vet examines the dog and agrees to perform surgery if shelter director Bebete Filipi can furnish medicines. Another pit bull rescue is frail and fading. After bathing the dog, we know why: Bicheira, flesh-eating maggots that hatch larvae in an animal's wounds. The horrific condition shows up over and over in animal disaster victims. Dennis spends one-on-one time with the pits, tending to a specific dog area daily. He dotes on the animals that some people fear. Dennis notes that one pittie, in particular, is sweet and mild-tempered. In another section of the shelter, Kinship Circle officer Sister Michael Marie, a vet tech, assists in treatment for a severely dehydrated dog, too weak to raise his head. After the shaggy terrier mix undergoes hours of electrolyte-enchanced IV fluids and antibiotic injection, he brightens considerbly. Support remains critical, as we continue to treat struggling animals. Today a middle-age woman leaves three dogs at the shelter. She bursts into tears and lingers with her dogs for a half hour before she departs, still crying. Her home destroyed, she has no means to care for her dogs. Bebete hopes the disaster shelter does not evolve into a dump site for unwanted animals. Puppy and kitten litters are left here. Bebete cannot turn any away. She'll stay here until all are adopted or fostered. Three, four months? Bebete shrugs. She doesn't know.

Has The Shelter Become A Waypoint For The Unwanted? With wall-to-wall animals, we somehow shuffle items around to squeeze in room for more. At early dawn Kinship Circle-IDA team members are the first onsite to clean and feed animals. The poop content alone can feel overwhelming, with rows of soiled cages to disinfect and re-line with fresh paper. Shelter manager Bebete Filpi and Kinship Circle's Sister Michael Marie administer antibiotic injections and Metronidazole (Flagyl) for chronic diarrhea. Another litter — five 8-week old pups — arrives in what seems to be a neverending stream. On average, one to two litters show up daily at the Teresopolis disaster shelter. Many kittens are dropped off today. Some belong to displaced residents who lost all means to care for them. Overwhelmed survivors surrender animals in desperation and grief. Understandable. But others use the emergency shelter as a dumping site for unwanted animals. Animals are found in milk crates and sacks on shelter grounds, sometimes at night so the people who discard them go unseen. Bebete is furious when a man discards his 7-year old German Shepherd, with him since a puppy. He is not permitted to bring his dog into a new apartment, though they weathered the disaster together. Still, Bebete reasons, it's better to leave the dog here than dump him in the streets. Post-disaster animal abandonment runs high in Teresopolis, a city outside Rio ravaged by floods and mudslides. Bebete realizes that her temporary crisis shelter could easily evolve into a way station for unwanted companion animals. The worn, cramped warehouse provides temporary refuge for animal disaster victims. But its population count rises with each passing day.

Bicheira Eats Flesh

Bicheira Eats Flesh

Portuguese: bicheiraEnglish: my•ia•sis – parasitic infestation by fly larvae (maggots) that grow in the host body while feeding on its tissue. Rescuers fear bicheira, already common here, is rampant. Flies lay eggs inside an animal's wound. Maggots hatch that literally eat flesh. Dogs, cats, cows, horses and more animals with disaster-related injuries are treated for bicheira. In severe cases, a tail falls off. A limb or eye is removed to save their lives.

A man drops off a milk crate with a gray terrier mix inside. The dog has testicular bicheira. We extract hundreds of flesh-eating maggots, flushing the deep wound over and over. He is dosed with Capstar. A German Shepherd and another shep-mix are treated for bicheira in quarantine. A dog who lost nearly half his face to bicheira escapes death via eye removal and meds. A Rio man adopted the lucky pup! Vet drugs are in short supply. Please donate today.

In kinship, not dominion, each individual is seen. We do not use the rhetoric of slavery. To define animals as unique beings Guardian, Caregive, Him/Her/They… replace Owner, Own, It… Until moral equity and justice serve all — no one is free.
