Abbeville Shelter: Need volunteers now for large animals (horses, cows) in Rita storm areas. Help needed for companion animals brought to temporary Abbeville Shelter. Animals also held at Sugarena in Iberia for 30 days. Then animals go to local shelters, foster.

Surgarena Acadiana Fairground: No volunteer needs at present time. Dogs, cats, geese, goats, cows, horses here. Up for adoption after 30 days.

Volunteer Information
Animals housed at the Calcasieu Parish Animal Services, including animals from the Lamar Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales, were evacuated to Caddo Parish Animal Control in Shreveport due to Hurricane Rita. Staff and animals are now returning to Lake Charles.

We seek people with experience in search-rescue, animal control/humane officer field, veterinarians, vet techs, feral cat/aggressive animal handlers, dog trainers, groomers, emergency response training. We also need shelter workers to clean cages, dispense food/water and provide TLC, along with people qualified to manage paperwork, electronic records and data. If you are self-contained (have RV or ready to camp) that is ideal.

Volunteer Information
We've been helping Pontchartrain Humane Society, plus animals from Pearlington, Mississippi, and Plaquemines Parish and New Orleans in Louisiana. Kinship Circle helped us gain National Guard clearance into Plaquemines for search-rescue. We were one of the first out-state groups in the parish.

Volunteers convene at Lansas Kennels in Mandeville, LA. People of every age and ability are needed for paperwork and animal care at the Mandeville shelter, as well as rescue in New Orleans. Bring a tent or vehicle you can sleep in. Camping area with bathrooms available. Some returning volunteers have complained about lack of organization at Lansas Kennels. We can assure you rescue teams meet here to save trapped animals in New Orleans. The Mandeville Rescue Task Force is now coordinating efforts with MuttShack to bring some rescued animals back to Lansas Kennels.

9/27/05  ~  HSUS is looking to wind down the Gonzales operation. Fact: There is a measure of truth to this, but it's not by choice. Property managers want us out, and they've waged a campaign of harassment to drive us out. What's more, we operate under the incident command structure of the State Veterinarian's Office and meet with the state team daily. The've asked us to cease intake of animals by 9/30/05. We are beseeching them to let us continue for a longer period, and are cautiously optimistic we'll persuade them to extend our rescue operations through Lamar Dixon. In addition, we work with Louisiana SPCA to ready their new operations site. On October 1, we expect that facility to be operational in Algiers (in New Orleans).

9/25/05, HSUS/RAVS Disaster Response Schedule Update  ~  The word today is that we'll aim to demobilize both Lamar-Dixon and Hattiesburg, MS facilities within the next 1-2 weeks, moving all remaining animals to foster/adoption at shelters around the country. As this occurs our volunteer needs will begin to decrease. By 10/5 we should be operating with limited shelter and veterinary staff to process and care for any rescued animals. Of course, the nature of disaster response work is always unpredictable, so we may continue to need full staffing for a longer time period than expected.

**Anyone looking for a lost pet is advised to search Lamar-Dixon and Hattiesburg shelters ASAP. If you know any evacuees you can help transport to either shelter, do so now.

LSU Emergency Animal Shelter will stop accepting new animals on 9/30/05 and the operation closes 10/15/05. [Guardians] must reclaim animals by 9/30/05, or give consent for foster care or adoption. Many kind and generous families in the Baton Rouge area have offered to temporarily foster pets from the Parker Coliseum Emergency Animal Shelter.
